About Us

We are a children's theatre company based in Liverpool and dedicated to the fusion of education and entertainment.

In the Early Years and Key Stage One age groups children are yearning to use their imagination and to play.

We have therefore built our company around this concept and to make life even easier we come to you! Whether a classroom, village hall, library or community centre, we'd be happy to come and visit.

We can adapt ourselves into any space provided.

Our workshops can be adjusted to suit you.

Drama workshops- Fun and games, learning about characterisation, working together in groups and in partners and creating a scene together.

Storytelling workshops- Focusing on how stories are made. We will look at all the different factors that come together to create a story and then we will write and perfom a short piece to showcase what we have learnt.

Our shows have been devised and created with an educational advisor to maintain a high standard and to incorporate curriculum objectives.
  • Early years teachers can link the workshop material and performance to 'Social and Personal learning', 'Language learning and communication' including numeracy skills and attentive listening and 'The Active learning processes' with a focus on thinking, investigating, imagining and responding.
  • We incorporate Key stage one English ‘speaking and listening’, Drama ‘using language and actions to explore and convey situations, characters and emotions’, and music ‘Creating and understanding rhythms’.

We encourage children to participate as much as they can in both the workshop and show, and with their contributions and involvement it now becomes their story.

To be honest it's just as much fun for us as it is for them because who doesn't love to PLAY?

Jessica Buxton

Jessica trained at Bath Spa University where she gained a degree in English Literature and Drama, she then went on to do an MA in Acting at The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA). Graduating in 2008, Jessica has spent the majority of her professional acting work in the children's theatre genre, gaining hands on experience in entertaining and educating and an insight into what children want and need from a production.
Jessica created The Bookworm Players with the help of The Women's Organisation, and LIPA.

As well as being an Actor Jessica has put her English degree skills to work by writing and producing plays, her first play 'Broken Wings' was published in 2010 and performed at The Unity Theatre, Liverpool.

For children's theatre and The Bookworm Players fans Jess adapted Goldilocks, The Secret Garden, Treasure Island and The Ugly Duckling. She also wrote and directed 'The Elf Who Forgot About Christmas' our sell out Christmas tour of 2013.

Jessica's main reason for creating The Bookworm Players was her realisation that Early Years and Key stage one children were not being catered for properly by theatre companies...oh and also because she is a big kid at heart.

With our shows we are able to produce quality interactive workshops and performances for smaller groups of children.

Our theatre is fun and energetic and should spark imagination!

Performances for Early Years will be slightly different to Key Stage One audiences as we cater for their needs and abilities and desire to interact.

All actors are professionally trained with DBS checks and have extensive experience of working with children.
